Last week, I was on a strategy call with a coach who asked me a question I hear at least twice a week.
"Do I need a full website, or would a simple landing page be enough to start bringing in leads?"
If you've been wrestling with this same question for your coaching practice, consulting business, or local service company, you're definitely not alone. And you're not behind.
It seems like a small tech decision, but here's the truth. This choice can directly impact how many leads you attract and how quickly they convert. I've seen businesses waste months and thousands of dollars on the wrong setup while others hit the ground running with the perfect fit for their stage.
Let's break it down in real terms so you can make this decision with confidence.
Here's how I explain this to my clients.
A landing page is like a laser pointer. It has ONE job. Directing attention to a SINGLE action.
A website is more like a house with different rooms. Each page serves a unique purpose and gives visitors space to explore at their own pace.
Think about it this way.
Landing pages are built for conversion. One page, one clear message, one button. No distracting navigation or links to click away. Designed specifically to turn visitors into leads.
Websites are built for the long game. Multiple pages showing everything you offer. Navigation that lets people get to know you better. Content that builds trust and authority over time.
Let's look at how this plays out in the real world.
Think about music education businesses. When looking to fill their roster for the new semester, smart music schools don't send Facebook ads to their main website with dozens of pages. Instead, they create focused landing pages for their free trial lessons. This approach makes perfect sense. A visitor gets one clear offer with one clear next step.
We see major businesses using this strategy all the time. Look at what happens when you click on an online ad from a tax service during tax season. You don't land on their main site. You land on a specific page about the exact service the ad mentioned, with one clear call to action.
This pattern repeats across all kinds of service businesses.
The most successful business coaches use dedicated landing pages for their signature programs rather than sending everyone to their main site. Marie Forleo, for example, uses dedicated landing pages for her B-School program that focus on getting visitors to take a specific action.
Home service companies create emergency-specific landing pages that convert significantly better than sending people to their general homepage. Roto-Rooter's landing pages are designed with clear visuals, contact information, and specific service details that make it easy for customers to book appointments.
Even fitness companies follow this model. When promoting a specific challenge or offering, they create dedicated landing pages rather than relying solely on their main website.
Here's where most business owners get confused. This isn't actually an either/or decision.
The smartest approach for most service providers is using both in strategic ways.
Your website serves as your digital home base. It's where people return when they want to learn more about you after that initial contact.
Your landing pages are your special tools that you deploy for specific campaigns, promotions, or to capture traffic from ads.
I like to tell clients, "Your website builds trust 24/7, while your landing pages step in when you need focused conversion for a specific offer."
Look at successful businesses across industries. Many of them use this combo approach. Their websites educate prospects about their methodology and services while their landing pages focus on converting interested visitors into leads. This strategy creates a complete ecosystem that supports both discovery and conversion.
Let me give it to you straight.
Landing pages have several advantages. You can build one in a day, not weeks. They're laser-focused on getting you leads. They're perfect for running ads or email campaigns. But they won't help much with getting found in Google, and they're limited for building deep trust or authority.
Websites also have clear strengths. They establish you as a legitimate, trustworthy provider. They support all your different service offerings. They can bring in organic traffic through SEO. The downside? They take longer and cost more to build well, and they can confuse visitors without clear calls-to-action.
Want to know the #1 mistake service businesses make with their online presence?
Creating hybrid pages that don't commit to either purpose. You've probably seen these. Pages that look like homepages but try to convert like landing pages.
These "homepage-landing-page mutants" usually confuse visitors instead of guiding them.
Think about the last time you visited a coaching website and felt overwhelmed by options. The homepage tried to do EVERYTHING at once. It explained their story, listed all their programs, showed testimonials, AND asked you to book a call.
With so many options, most visitors choose none.
When pages are stripped back to focus on one signature program with a clear journey for visitors, booking rates typically improve dramatically. I've seen businesses completely transform their results just by making this one change to their approach.
Ask yourself ONE question.
What's the single action I want people to take when they land on my page?
If your answer is specific and actionable like "book a discovery call," "download my guide," or "sign up for a free session," then start with a landing page.
If your answer sounds more like "learn about my coaching approach," "browse my different services," or "see my client results," then you need a website.
Here's my practical advice based on where you are.
Just starting out? Launch with a landing page focused on your core offer. Test it before investing in a full website.
Running paid ads? ALWAYS send traffic to dedicated landing pages, not your homepage.
Have multiple services? Build a website, but make sure each page has ONE clear next step.
Already established? Use both. Your website for information seekers, landing pages for converting warm leads.
Small changes in how you structure your online presence can have a HUGE impact on your results. Many service businesses have seen dramatic increases in qualified leads just by sending their ads to service-specific landing pages instead of their homepage.
You don't need a massive digital overhaul to start seeing results. You just need to match the right tool to where your business is RIGHT NOW.
For most service providers, the journey looks like this.
Start with a simple landing page focused on your best offer. Once that's converting well, add more landing pages for other services. Build a full website when you're ready to establish deeper authority. Continue using targeted landing pages for specific promotions and ads.
Remember, this isn't about having the fanciest setup. It's about having the right setup for YOUR business at THIS stage. The most successful businesses often started with very simple online presences and grew them strategically over time.

Can I launch my coaching business with just a landing page?
Absolutely! Many successful service businesses started with nothing but a landing page. You can generate significant revenue before ever building a full website. The key is having a focused offer and clear call to action.
Will a landing page help with Google rankings for my service business?
Not really. If you want to show up when people search for your services, you'll eventually need a full website with proper SEO. But you can start generating leads with landing pages WHILE you build that out.
I'm a consultant just starting out. Should I build a full site right away?
I almost always recommend starting with a landing page for your signature offer. It's faster, cheaper, and lets you test your messaging before making a bigger investment. You can always expand later.
I already have a service business website that's not generating leads. What now?
This is super common! Nine times out of ten, the problem is that your website is trying to do too many things at once. Consider creating focused landing pages for specific services or streamlining your existing pages for clearer user journeys.
What's the best tool for a coach to build a landing page?
We primarily recommend ClickFunnels for most service businesses. It's what we use ourselves because it lets you create both high-converting landing pages AND build your entire website in one platform. Other options like Leadpages and WordPress with Elementor exist, but ClickFunnels offers the best balance of ease-of-use and powerful features for coaches and consultants. You can try it free for 14 days using our link before deciding. Remember though, whichever tool you choose, clear messaging and a focused offer matter more than the platform itself.
